Mindful spending is something that most of us weren’t taught and was more than likely learned through years of mistakes (this was the case for me, anyway!) In a nutshell, mindful spending is about cultivating awareness and consciousness around your financial choices. It involves making intentional decisions about where your money goes and aligning your spending with your values and priorities. Instead of mindlessly swiping your card, mindful spending encourages you to pause, reflect, and make choices that contribute to your overall financial health.

Okay, I know that seems like a lot, but I promise, with a little discipline and education on this matter, you will be on the right track in no time.

Create a Budget

 With a clear understanding of my income and expenses, I crafted a budget that was both realistic and sustainable. I allocated a specific amount to each spending category, ensuring that I had money left over for savings. And, honestly, once I started doing this, it became fun!

Start by understanding your income, fixed expenses, and discretionary spending. A well-defined budget provides a roadmap for your financial journey, helping you allocate funds to necessities, savings, and debt repayment. (Here is a budget planner like the one I use)

Prioritize Needs Over Wants

This is a tough one. I’m not gonna lie but sometimes the two can tend to run together. This is where you need to take a good look and decide what is a necessity and what isn’t.

Distinguish between essential needs and discretionary wants. Prioritize spending on necessities like housing, utilities, and groceries. Consider wants as rewards for meeting financial goals rather than impulsive purchases

Build an Emergency Fund

Establishing an emergency fund acts as a financial safety net. Aim to save at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses. This fund can cover unexpected expenses, reducing the likelihood of falling back into a paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. I encourage you to take it a step further. Once you’ve saved at least six months’ worth of living expenses, aim for nine months, twelve months, etc.

This way, I saved a portion of my income before I even had a chance to spend it. Set Financial Goals

Define short-term and long-term financial goals. Whether it’s paying off debt, saving for a vacation, or investing for the future, having clear goals provides motivation and direction for your financial decisions.
